Description
HbA1c, also known as glycated hemoglobin, is a blood test that measures average blood sugar levels over the past 2-3 months. It is widely used as a diagnostic tool for diabetes and to monitor glucose control in people with diabetes. The test works by measuring the amount of glucose that has bonded with hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells. As red blood cells have a lifespan of approximately 3 months, the HbA1c test provides an average of blood sugar levels over this period.
A high HbA1c level indicates poor glucose control and an increased risk of developing diabetes-related complications, such as heart disease, nerve damage, and kidney damage. A low HbA1c level indicates good glucose control and a lower risk of complications.
